Court defers Manipur fake encounter case

IMPHAL, Nov 17 – The nine cops accused in the July 23, 2009 Imphal market fake encounter case where a former militant, Sanjit and a pregnant woman, Rabina Devi had lost their lives, appeared before the court of district and session judge, Manipur East.

The hearing, however, has been deferred by the court to December 18. The nine accused who were chargesheeted by the CBI have been identified as City police OC, Y Munal, H Debendro, constable Th Herojit, rifleman Ng Toyaima, constable W Binoykumar, Havildar Th Jagat, rifleman Md Imran Khan, head constable Oinam Kishore and constable Makon Kauchung Chothe.

The accused had been granted bail at Chirap Court, Imphal on September 28 last after the CBI submitted the chargesheet on September 9 opening door for the investigation of the fake encounter of July 23.

According to CBI chargesheet, head constable Herojit has been accused of shooting and killing Sanjit on orders from Inspector Debendra. Y Munal, the then OC of city police, Imphal West has been accused of destroying the evidence with the intention of defending the Manipur police commando.
