Gunman assaults police personnel in civil dress

Imphal, Nov 25 : A gunman beat up some police personnel who were in civil dress at gunpoint on Monday evening in Churachandpur district headquarters, leaving two of them with serious injuries.

A delayed official report today said that two of the police personnel at the Reserve Line of the district police were severely injured when the gunman attacked them at Bijang Family Land and New Lamka of Churachandpur.

They had intercepted the gunman who in turn attacked them with his pistol butt.

They (police personnel) were coming back from visiting the house of one of their colleagues Lumlianthang Vaiphei (21) son of Ginlam Vaiphei of Bethel Veng, New Lamka.

Lumlianthang and his colleague Sotinthang Hangsing of Ngulkhogam village sustained injuries in the assault and were hospitalized at the Churachandpur District Hospital.

Others sustained minor injuries at the head, the report said.

According to the source the lone gunman came out from a house on the eastern side of the road and started hitting one after another with his pistol butt without any provocation and taking advantage of the darkness fled from the place.

Churachandpur police investigating into the case after having registering a case, suspect the assailant to be a cadre of a militant outfit actively operating in the area.
