New Delhi, May 30 : A 22-year-old woman from Manipur, identified as Leinganphi, was found dead inside her rented accommodation at Malviya Nagar in south Delhi this afternoon.
Police initially suspected it to be a case of suicide.
However, they did not rule out foul play later as the body bore marks of injury on the legs and near the eyes.
“Prima facie it seems that she committed suicide by consuming some toxic substance. We have found some empty strips of capsules from her room. But we have not ruled out foul play as there are some injury marks on the body as well,” said a senior police official.
According to him, empty wrappers of Spasmocip Plus-16 tablets and Meftal-Spas 12-tablets (diclomine HCL) were found in the dustbin in the deceased’s room during their search.
Around noon, the police control room received a call from the landlord saying his tenant had locked herself in the room and was not responding to repeated knocks.
A police team rushed to the spot and broke open the door.
The team found the victim lying on the bed.
“Her cell phone was in her hand,” the official added.
According to her uncle, she came to Delhi from Manipur’s Ukhrul district only a few months ago and was working in a nearby mall.
“The main door was locked from inside but another door was open. We are probing all angles to the case,” he said.
The body has been sent for a post-mortem to AIIMS.
“A Central Forensic Science Laboratory team is also assisting us in the investigation. We will get to know the exact cause of her death only after getting the autopsy report,” said an official of Malviyanagar police station.
A probe revealed that her boyfriend used to visit her.
“Our team is trying to locate him. He had come to visit her last evening but she did not open the door,” the official said.
In May 2010, a man was arrested and a case of molestation registered against him at Vasant Vihar police station in New Delhi for his indecent behaviour and lewd remarks to a Manipuri woman in the Munirka area in south Delhi.
