Politicians and students in Manipur have been taking to the streets
demanding an end to the "racial discrimination" meted out to the
students and youths from the Northeast.
The All Manipur Gorkha Students' Union staged a sit-in protest in
Senapati district recently. They demanded action be taken against those
who had assaulted youths from the Northeast region.
The All Manipur Barbers Association whose members are mostly Biharis
also strongly condemned the recurring attacks in Delhi. In a statement,
its president, Roshun Kumar Thakur, termed the government failure to
book the criminals as a national shame. “India is a land of different
communities and they have been living in peace and communal harmony. The
government should maintain law and order and the youths from the
Northeast should not be alienated.”
The non-BJP and non-Congress political parties in Manipur also took out a
rally in the streets of Imphal on Thursday demanding the assaulters be
charged. They also demanded enactment of the anti-racist bill during the
current session of Parliament.
