Opposition member of the House of
Manipur Assembly Monday insisted the state government to declare the
United Naga Council (UNC) as unlawful organization, reacting to a news
report regarding parting of ways between the Nagas and the Meiteis in
Manipur.
United Naga Council (UNC) has reiterated the call for a peaceful
parting of ways between the Nagas and the Meiteis in Manipur saying both
the communities can never live together due to several factors as
reported in various dailies on March 2.
The statement of the UNC came up even as its leaders were camping
in New Delhi and holding a series of consultative meetings with top
officials of the Union ministry of home affairs (MHA) on the issue of
‘alternative arrangement’ demands of the United Naga Council.
Taking up the matter during the zero hour of the Assembly session,
opposition member L Ibomcha drew the attention of the House that state
government should declare UNC as unlawful organization, citing that the
statement of the United Naga Counci leaders tantamount to inciting
communal disharmony between the Nagas and Meiteis.
“Government should not take the matter lightly,” he insisted.
As there was no need for replying to the demand of the opposition
members, chief minister O Ibobi Singh and other minister has not given
any observation on the demand.
On the other hand, after the United Committee Manipur and All
Manipur United Clubs Organization, separate apex bodies of civil
organizations based in the state strongly reacted to the move of the
Centre in constituting a high level committee to look into the
‘alternative arrangement” demand of the United Naga Council, various
civil organizations continued to react the Centre’s move.
The expressed apprehensions that the Centre’s move was same as
declaring breaking of territorial integrity of Manipur, cautioning that
the state of Manipur cannot be disintegrated in any way whatsoever.
Reacting to the Centre’s move, Women Welfare Organisation,
Kangleipak said that the statement of joint secretary of ministry of
home affairs, Sambhu to constitute a high level committee in connection
with the alternative arrangement demand of the UNC to be formed within
ten days from February 28 was very unfortunate.
It was a clear case of taking the issues of the state of Manipur
very lightly, the statement said, adding that whatever be the case, the
women body will stand for the territorial integrity of Manipur and will
see that nothing disturbs its territorial integrity.
The All Manipur Youth Protection Committee (AMYPCO) also stated
that no move of the government of India can disturb the territorial
integrity of the state.
The United All Communities Social Up-Lifter, Kangleipak also
expressed strong concern over Manipur government’s show of uninterested
to alternative arrangement demand.
