Chungkhokai Doungel, who joined the BJP, and state party president Thounaojam Chaoba Singh |
Imphal, July 3: The Manipur unit of
the BJP is growing in strength after Narendra Modi became Prime
Minister with one NCP and two Trinamul Congress leaders joining the
party today and several others in the line.
Former minister and Kuki leader
Chungkhokai Doungel, who contested in the Lok Sabha election on an NCP
ticket in the Outer Manipur parliamentary constituency, joined the party
today.
Along with Doungel, R.K. Shivachandra
Singh, general secretary and spokesperson of the Trinamul Congress, also
joined the BJP. Kh. Ibomcha Singh, who contested in the 2012 state
Assembly election from Lamlai constituency in Imphal East on a Trinamul
Congress ticket, also joined the party.
The three are the first prominent leaders to join BJP in Manipur after the BJP led NDA government came to power at the Centre.
Welcoming the three to the party fold and
giving his consent to their joining, state BJP president Thounaojam
Chaoba Singh said the trio’s joining would certainly strengthen the BJP
in Manipur.
“It is a happy day for me and Manipur BJP.
More leaders are lining up to join our party. We give permission to
those who want to come to our party after consultation with central
leaders,” Chaoba Singh said.
With the BJP in power at the Centre, the
party is working hard to dethrone the Okram Ibobi Singh-led Congress
government in the next state Assembly election. The Ibobi Singh
government is completing two-and-a-half years next month.
The BJP has no MLA at present.
“The Congress government has miserably
failed to deliver the goods. There is more corruption and people are
suffering because of price rise and unemployment,” Chaoba Singh said.
Chaoba Singh said the BJP could provide not only a stable but also efficient and corruption-free government in Manipur.
Several leaders joined the party before the Lok Sabha election. It contested in both the Lok Sabha seats in the state, but lost.
With the BJP in power in Delhi, the state
unit is busy renovating the old party head office and also expanding the
office buildings here.
“I decided to join the BJP after seeing
the efficiency of Narendra Modi and his intention of bringing change in
the country. I have faith in Modi that he can also bring change in
Manipur,” Shivachandra Singh said.
Ibomcha Singh also said he would like to
strengthen the hands of the Prime Minister by joining the BJP. The three
leaders said their supporters also joined the party.
