IMPHAL: A 32-year-old woman gave birth to quintuplets—one boy and four girls—at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) hospital here on Monday afternoon, creating history in the state.

Geeta Devi, the mother, was referred to RIMS by gynaecologists of Bishnupur district hospital on Monday morning. In the afternoon, Geeta gave birth to the five within seven minutes under the care of three doctors. But one of the four girls, weighing 700 grams, died a few minutes later.

Of the remaining four, two, including the boy weighing 900 grams each, are healthy, doctors said. They added that Geeta's condition is stable.

All the four babies have been kept inside the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), they said. They added that Geeta has set a new record in delivering five babies naturally in the state.

A resident of Thanga village on the banks of the Loktak lake in Bishnupur district, Geeta already has four children — three boys and a girl — all born naturally. The eldest one, a boy, is 15 years old.
