THRISSUR:They had kicked off India’s Commonwealth Games campaign in
style six months ago and they have now done the same at the National
Games. The Manipur duo of Sanjita Chanu and Mirabai Chanu, who had
bagged the country’s first two medals in Glasgow, netted the first gold
and silver of the Games, in the women’s 48kg weightlifting event on
Sunday.
Both Sanjita and Mirabai were neck and neck in snatch, lifting 78kg each but the former broke away in clean and jerk, lifting 102kg. Mirabai had to settle for silver, lifting 95kg in clean and jerk and 173kg in total. Sanjita’s combined effort of 180kg was 7kg more than her gold-winning effort in Glasgow.
