IMPHAL, Oct 7 – Seven police personnel including Officer-in- Charge of a police station have been suspended in connection with the escape of a top militant leader from custody in Manipur. An inquiry has also been ordered into the incident.
The suspended police officials include Officer in Charge K Gitchandra, Sub-Inspectors Kh Tondon and Vaiphei, Assistant Sub-Inspector Md Sabir, constables Md Sakil, Md Tharood and Raghumani of Porompat police station, sources said.
Leader of Manipur-based armed group Kangleipak Communist Party-Mobile Task Force(KCP-MTF) Ch Aken Meitei alias Sunil Meitei alias Leninkumar alias Premkumar alias Prakash (35), a resident of Wahengkhuman Mayai Leikai village in Imphal West district escaped from the custody of Porompat police station in Imphal East district on Monday night, sources said.
The militant is suspected to have escaped by making a small hole in the cell wall before scaling a 6 ft high compound wall of the Police station.
Manipur DGP Y Joykumar inspected the police station. Later he issued a press statement on Tuesday and announced a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh to any person who can provide information or otherwise leading to the arrest of the escaped militant leader dead or alive.
Popularly known as Sunil Meitei, he is wanted in several criminal cases related to abduction, extortion and killing in various parts of the State. He was arrested from Bengaluru by a combined security team from Imphal and New Delhi on June 29 and brought back here for questioning on July 21 last.
Senior Police officials could not be contacted for their comment till the filing of this report.
