IMPHAL, Apr 2 – The Manipur Police Department will be streamlined and upgraded to international standard, said Manipur Home Minister G Gaikhangam at a reception organised by Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) at the Congress Bhavan here today.

Gaikhangam, who had taken over the charge of the Home Ministry from Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh, said that one of the most important tasks lying ahead of the Home Department is to develop police-public relationship. He expressed confidence that the Police Department can be streamlined and upgraded to be of world standard as the police personnel of Manipur are smart, active and has the potential to be among the best.

The Home Minister said that he was studying the issue minutely and having frequent briefings with top police officials so as to bring about necessary changes to create a friendly atmosphere between the police and public. There will be no compromise on maintaining law-and-order in the State and the Police Department will take up the responsibility of maintaining law and order in the State and book lawbreakers regardless of who they might be, added Gaikhangam.

On a slightly different topic, the Home Minister admitted that it would be difficult to maintain ground rules of the Suspension of Operation (SoO) agreement signed with Kuki militant outfits due to frequent breaks-up among themselves. He added that arms of cadres of the outfits which had signed SoO agreement with the government would now be in the custody of the government.
